Short-term Banking
In some cases, semen is stored by male patients in preparation for an
IVF
procedure. This ensures that sperm will be available on the day of IVF.
Your doctor may also suggest banking semen for use when the male patient will be out of town on the day of an
IUI
or IVF procedure.
Long-term Banking
For men who are undergoing medical treatment which might make them sterile (radiation or chemotherapy for cancer, surgery of the male urogenital system including vasectomy, and some spine surgeries).
Allows for future fertility following their medical or surgical treatment.
Patients who require
removal of sperm directly from the testicle or epididymis
also have sperm frozen prior to
IVF with ICSI
.
