Evaluation typically begins after 2 miscarriages that have occurred prior to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Causes include lifestyle factors such as smoking, medical problems such as diabetes, obesity. Other possible causes of POF are hormonal, clotting or uterine cavity abnormalities. In some cases, genetic abnormalities of the couple are involved.
Testing typically involves uterine cavity evaluation with saline sonogram, hysterosalpingogram, or hysteroscopy. Blood tests and genetic tests of each partner's chromosomes are also typically performed.
Similar to infertility, treatments are geared toward an identifiable cause if possible. Treatments may include surgical correction of uterine abnormalities, blood thinning medications, hormonal and/or nutritional supplementation, lifestyle modification, correction of thyroid disease, and/or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in appropriate cases.
We understand the devastating psychological toll this condition takes on couples and patients have the opportunity to have counseling visits with a social worker who is very familiar with these particular issues.
